Standards and Guidelines

At Adele's Legacy we believe strongly that "there is a head for every hat". No matter if the hat is simple or elaborate, single colored or multicolored, has tassels or pompoms, or nothing at all...no matter what the hat looks like there is a child who will absolutely adore it. There is nothing like a colorful scarf, either simply or intricately made, to go with the perfect hat. Some children choose a matching set and others prefer a more unique fashion statement.

Adele's Legacy gives out a lot of sweaters. Elementary school children vary in sizes from very small to adult, so providing enough sweaters that we will have one to fit every child is a challenge. But let's face it, there is almost NOTHING as sure to keep a kid cozy as a hand made knit sweater to go along with the hat and scarf!

Knitting
  1. All of the hats, scarves and sweaters we donate are made by hand. No store-bought items are considered for donation.

  2. All of the items must be made of man-made fibers (acrylic, polyester, nylon). This is because they will be LOVED and therefore will need to be washed frequently. Most of our donations are made with worsted weigh acrylic yarns.

  3. Decorations of hats, scarves and sweaters is not necessary, but if you want to decorate them GO FOR IT. Many of our volunteers love to use stripes or variegated yarn (yarn with many colors). Some of our hat makers prefer pompoms, tassels, or even crocheted flowers as decorations. Some of our scarves and sweaters have cables, or other stitch patterns that make the scarf more interesting for the knitter and more attractive to the child who chooses it.

  4. The sweaters we donate are well constructed, hearty sweaters. They along with the hats and scarves should last a long time.

  5. Sadly, hats, scarves and sweaters that are not made well do not get donated, and we do not want that to happen any of your items.

  6. One of the children will LOVE what you have made, no matter how it is or isn't decorated, even if it's the first one you have ever made.

If you are in Franklin or Bedford County, Virginia, contact us, because we will be able to provide you with enough yarn for a hat, scarf, and sweater or two!

Hats should have a height of 7 to 12 inches.  7 inches works great for most children (maximum height of 12 inches to add for a cuff). The base of the hat should be somewhere between 18 to 23 inches in circumference.

Scarves should be between 7 and 12 inches wide. This is the width comfortable to most children. Scarves should be between 40 to 60 inches long. If they are too short they can't wrap around the child's neck to keep them warm, if they are too long they might present a trip hazard.
