Adele Frischman

Adele Frischman founded the yarn rolling group in 2003.  It began as a project of the Smith Mountain Lake Women's Club, and then opened to the public.  The group started with six members, and has grown to over 30 participants.

    Our Story

Adele Frischman was responsible for soliciting free yarn remnants from an anonymous business donor in Rocky Mount, VA, and coordinated a group to help with hanking, rolling, storing, and distributing to local charities. The network for the distribution of the yarn and finished items is “near and far” – always with the purpose of giving to the community  –   no profit is gained.  Adele made it all possible!  With saddened hearts, Adele passed away in July 2012.  In her memory, friends decided to continue and carry on her projects, asking new knitters and crocheters to join us in creating hand created items for our community, and asking new rollers to join us in yarn rolling.

Many meet twice a month from 10:00 am to around noon at Trinity Ecumenical Parish, Moneta, Virginia. The schedule is emailed to participants and also is published online here on our Schedule menu tab, on our Facebook page, and on the Smith Mountain Lake Women's Club website and Facebook page.  Individuals knit or crochet hats, sweaters, scarves, lap robes, and baby items from this donated yarn.  Items donated by the Rollers are distributed to local charities which includes nursing homes in Bedford and Franklin Counties, local elementary schools, Red Cross, and any other charities and individuals. Yarn is also donated to other organizations, such as Smith Mountain Lake Women's Club, whose members knit and crochet items for local and global individuals and organizations.

The knitting and crocheting, along with the donations we are receiving, is wide-spread (in-state and out-of-state). Donations of hand-crafted items from the rolled yarn is accepted from anyone, you do not have to be a yarn roller to receive yarn to make a hand-crafted item to donate to us.

    Won't you join us?
